Welcome to our last race summary page! NOKIE FORNORO CLAIMS HIS 100TH MIDGET WIN AT OSWEGO'S NATIONAL PARTS PEDDLER MIDGET CHAMPIONSHIP SATURDAY (Thanks, Oswego Speedway Press) Oswego, NY Sept. 4- Nokie Fornoro has been waiting to notch his 100th career midget victory and he did it in fine style at Oswego Speedway Saturday night in the National Parts Peddler ARDC/NEMA co-sanctioned Midget Championship. Besting a stellar field of midgets which numbered 38 strong, Fornoro was greeted with an thunderous applause when he crossed the line just inches ahead of runner-up Phil DiMario. Fornoro put the 31 midget owned by the Mullens out of Michigan, into the lead on a lap 4 restart and was gone in pursuit of his career 100th. He was one exuberant driver when he climbed out of the cockpit after a near photo-finish with DiMario in traffic. The $2,000 paycheck didn't hurt either. "I'll tell you I've been waiting for this 100th midget win for quite some time now, said Fornoro who win total in all his various career rides totals 179 or 180, "I wanted it to happen in my home area. Not that I don't enjoy running in the Midwest, but this is where I got my start and I can't think of a better damn race track to win at! You people out there are the best race fans. Without you people we don't exist. Phil DiMario is a hell of a driver and I told him that he'd have to come underneath me to beat me if I got the lead. Well, he got a run and almost beat me. It was close at the end there. I'd like to thank car owners Gary and Becky Mullens for coming out here from Michigan tonight. Also Seymour Enterprises and Bobby Seymour, Hoosier and all the guys behind the team, and Linda Mansfield, my pr person, who I always forget to mention. Once again thank you all very much." The large midget field was diminished by several cars early in the day due to crashes and mechanical failure. Matt O'Brien, of Framingham, MA, was taken to the hospital after a hard crash with Ed Breault in heat number 2 for a checkup. Drew Fornoro, who won his heat, found his car to have a fatal motor problem. He then had to bump out teammate Joe Gosek for the backup Angelillo ride. Fornoro, however, had that new car fail him too.. He was then offered the Howard Bumpus 54 car for the feature, his third ride of the day. The midget championship started out on the wrong foot with 3 cars ending up in the foam in between 3 and 4 before a lap was down. The incident involved former winner at Oswego Russ Stoehr, Barry Cannon and Bob Boetticher. Cannon and Stoehr went off on hooks while Boetticher restarted. Monnie Wonder finally assumed the lead of the 30-car field when things got underway and he was chased early by Kevin Bastian and Ed Stimely Jr. Caution flew again on lap 4 for a minor incident. This slowdown allowed Stoehr to get back in the action, but he would have a lot of ground to make up. On the restart of lap 4, Nokie Fornoro put his 31 by Wonder and he fled the scene. Phil DiMario made quick work of Wonder and Bastian to try to keep in touch with Fornoro. It was Fornoro, DiMario, Bastian, Stimely and Bob Seymour in order when another yellow flew on lap 12 for the 21 of NEMA's Barry Kittredge, who was able to restart. DiMario showed Nokie a wheel alongside on this restart, but Nokie pulled away again as the race passed the midway mark. It was Nokie Fornoro, DiMario, Bastian, and now Andy Baumgartner and Stimely Jr. as the race approached the five-to-go signal. The leaders pulled into a mass of heavy traffic as the race neared the end and on the final circuit, DiMario made the charge that Fornoro told him he'd have to make to get by, but missed by inches. In the meantime, Stimely's 64 slowed dramatically, sending him limping out of a top five. Moving into take his place was the 76 of Mark Buonomo. At the checkered it was Nokie Fornoro, DiMario, Bastian, Baumgartner and Buonomo in the top five with Drew Fornoro salvaging 6th in a strange day for that previous winner at Oswego. Bryan Kobylarz recovered from a warm-up accident to finish 7th with Paul Lawless, Glen Cabral and Jim Miller, rounding out the top ten.
